Ji Zou
Ji Zou (b. 1994) is a Michigan-born multidisciplinary artist whose work channels the erotic, the digital, and the subconscious into dreamlike visual realms. Raised in a cross-cultural, polygynous family in suburban Michigan, Ji’s early curiosity about perception, identity, and inner life was shaped by both neuroscience and meditation—a combination that continues to inform their practice. After years of experimentation as a digital painter and commercial illustrator in New York City, they earned an MFA in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design, where their work expanded into mixed media and airbrush techniques.
Ji’s art unfolds like a dialogue with the unseen: subconscious urges, online subjectivities, memory, and the interplay of power and desire. Their paintings evoke surreal, undefined spaces drawn from dreams, lived experience, and internal contradiction, seeking not to depict reality but to make its ineffable contours visible. By weaving personal symbolism with broader cultural forces, Ji’s work resists easy interpretation, acting as both emotional archive and speculative terrain in which meaning is always in flux.
