Jakub Tomáš (b. 1982) is a Czech painter who studied under Vladimír Kokolia and Jiří Sopko at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. His layered, collage-like canvases blur reality and fiction, using optical illusions and veil-like nets to split each scene into “in front” and “behind”. Drawing on Cubism, Czech animation, puppetry and folk art, his figures move like puppets. He exhibits widely in Europe and the US, with recent solo shows in Los Angeles and New York (2024).
