Artwork Description: Initially conceived as a series of interventions on Coca-Cola bottles being sold in public spaces; QR codes printed on the bottles linked to a web page displaying an online counter, continuously counting up at the rate at which Coca-Cola products are bought and consumed on a global scale per second.

The act through which the Coke bottles are bought and consumed (in which the QR link is destroyed and text made illegible) is mimicked within the work; audience members are invited to take a cool refreshing Coca-Cola, and either leave it intact as an artwork or drinking it as a consumable. As the bottle progressively empties of dark brown liquid, the barcode and text becomes increasingly invisible, to the point where the link is no longer functional and text is hard to discern. The work, as intervention, goes beyond the viewer in the gallery or museum, and extends to a wider public who may be unaware of their contact with art.

Text (‘Consume’, ‘Conform’, ‘Submit’) is in reference to John Carpenters satirical look at consumerism and social control, They Live (1988).

About the artist: Born in Leicester 1985, lives in London. Chris Cawkwell's work explores consumer culture within a capitalist framework; utilising contemporary technologies, performative and interactive elements to critique the social systems and processes which operate around us and highlight the rate at which products are consumed and commodified.

Cawkwell graduated with a masters in Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Art in 2012. He has exhibited nationally and internationally; in Mumbai, India, as part of the cross-collaborative venture Project India (Asia Arts Projects & the 1%-ers art collective, 2011) and in Tokyo, Japan, part of Tokyo Wonder Site's creator in residence program (2012).

He has completed residency programs at Space 118, Mumbai, (2011), Tokyo Wonder Site, Aoyama, (2012) and at the Bohunk Institute, Nottingham, in preparation for solo show Sensorama (2013). His work forms part of the permanent collection at Space 118.

Caring for your Print

Listed below are a few suggestions to help you take good care of your new print!

Our prints are wrapped with care in acid-free tissue paper and shipped rolled to ensure their safe arrival. To maintain their impeccable condition, it is important to store your print flat until framing.

It is advisable to keep your artwork in a space with normal temperature to avoid any unfavourable effects caused by extreme temperatures or humidity. We recommend framing your print behind glass to shield it from any environmental hazards.

When selecting a frame, we suggest choosing one with Art Glass. This type of glass will protect your print from UV damage and help preserve its colour and quality for an extended period of time.
