Kirsty Bell

Kirsty Bell’s work strives for proximity but never quite reaches an ultimate conclusion. Her work seeks to generate elusive, shape-shifting images, blending found components gleaned and gathered from the environment surrounding her, manipulating them to create a nearness to something other. She forms imagery that oscillates and is suspended between conclusion and inception. Her photographic source material deal in types of artifice, fashion shoots, books on flower arranging and other found sources provide painterly coat hangers, catalysts for painterly exploration which both negate and activate the image in equal measure. The images are all appearance but paradoxically all absence.

Along with utilising the trompe l’oeil painting technique, she disrupts the barrier between the painting and the spectator, stretching the plane of reality and denying straightforward interpretation. For Bell, painting’s strength lies in its splendid uselessness: a mute surface that neither answers fully nor resolves. It is a doorway to elsewhere, a resting place for doubt, where meaning slips and the unresolved is allowed to breathe.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0664/1244/5985/collections/Toxic_Arts_Oct_2026_043_Large_a4bd5797-35e3-4de8-a7be-6baf7c63177f.jpg?v=1793119007
