Matthew Bacher is a San Diego-based painter whose work centres on the body. Originally a tattoo artist in New York, he turned to painting full time after moving to California. During lockdown his focus shifted from figures in landscape to the single figure, filling his studio with painted bodies in place of the people missing from his life. Applied through intuitive, gestural brushstrokes, his distorted figures press against the edges of the canvas, frozen mid-motion and full of restless energy. He has taken part in residencies at Arts Letters and Numbers and Signal Fire.
