Introducing Mykhailo Piskur (b.1995), an emerging artist based in Kyiv, Ukraine.
in his latest works, Mykhailo turns his attention to the subtle choreography of everyday life: a glance, a pause, a touch, or the simple act of being. He is drawn to the moments when people are not performing, but simply existing - sitting, standing, holding, looking. Through these intimate portrayals, he seeks not to dramatise, but to reveal the vulnerability, doubt, and hope that reside in us all. “I grew up in a Ukrainian village. At the same time, there was another reality - Western culture, especially African American: music, films, style, TV shows. It was my imagined world. Friends would return from America bringing something distant, something special. I didn’t realise it then, but that culture became part of me - like my childhood among apple trees and horses, close to nature. In my work, everything flows naturally. The people I paint are often Black because it feels true to my experience and memory. My images are simple, even naive, like childhood drawings - honest in their search for good in the world, to capture attention, presence, and the quiet space where we can just be ourselves.”
