JACOB NICHOLSON

Delving into the intriguing realm of childhood and play, Jacob’s latest series ‘Small Arms’ poses thought-provoking questions about the nature of innocence and power. Inspired by the allure of toy weapons in children’s play, his artwork explores the delicate balance between imagination and reality. Get ready to embark on a journey through vivid playtime scenarios and hyperreal imagery as we delve into Jacob’s fascinating exploration of innocence and threat.

“Why do children love to play with toy weapons? This question preoccupies my latest series.

Do toy weapons appeal to instincts, primal and potent, that society forbids? Or do they let children express a longing for power in a world where they have so little?

Through a series of playtime scenarios, this collection explores the interplay between childhood imagination and violence; between innocent creativity and real physical threat.

In the universe of these works, hyperreal weaponry appears against lurid playroom imagery, chasing the feverish joy of playing with a new toy - is this menace real, or harmless?”
