WADE KELLY

Wade Kelly (b.1989) is a multidisciplinary conceptual artist based in Sydney whose work spans painting, sculpture, and installation. With a background in film production and poetry, his practice integrates language, found objects, and domestic materials to explore the human condition and contemporary society.

His recent work examines collective memory and mythmaking, reinterpreting Michael Jordan’s career through vibrant colors and dynamic compositions, prompting reflections on a culture obsessed with performance and perfection. Extending these themes into three-dimensional arrangements, Kelly recontextualizes everyday objects into provocative installations, balancing humor and confrontation. His work explores existence in a commodified world, pushing boundaries to foster critical engagement and self-reflection.

1 / 3

Focusing on a universally recognisable icon in Michael Jordan the paintings offer a meditation on the role of the idol in a contemporary society drifting further away from traditional faith based collectives such as religion. Instead we are offered celebrities, politicians, billionaires and sports stars to our salvation and direction.

Who are the saints and saviours of today? Do they deliver on their promise?

Their actions give us the structure but it is the court of public opinion or rather collective memory that writes the legend. Through vibrant colours, dynamic compositions, and soft edges, the paintings will transcend mere representation, aiming to evoke the emotions embedded in the collective memory.

This series will add to the conceptual framework by repositioning the form of the ongoing narrative surrounding Jordan by placing it in the medium of painting and presenting it within the gallery context.
